Terry and Clarence Low: Don't add meta tags too early

February 14, 2009

Q: I am developing "meta tags" and keywords for my Web site. We sell phone systems to small and medium-sized businesses. We have a new VoIP product coming out in the third quarter of 2009. Should I include VoIP as part of my keywords?

A: Unless you have specific content speaking to your upcoming product rollout later this year, I do not recommend adding VoIP into the meta tag work at this time.

When the site is launched, the major search engines will re-index the site, and if it determines that the keywords are not relevant to the content in the Web site, it will negatively affect your page ranking.

You can update the meta tags and content once the new product is launched.

Q: I bought a new computer this year that came with a 22-inch LCD monitor. My Web pages in Internet Explorer look strange on screen, as if there are huge borders on the left and right side of each page. Are my settings off? How can I fix this?

A: It sounds like the display settings on your monitor are set correctly, and that the Web page is displaying properly, probably centered on screen. Keep in mind that larger monitors nowadays are able to display much higher resolutions that in the past. And with that increased resolution, you can display more windows on the screen.

The borders that you see are a normal artifact of this increased real estate. It may take a short time to adjust to it, or you can resize the browser window so the Web page is framed tighter to what you are used to seeing.
