Terry and Clarence Low: Quick fix for mystery .pps e-mails

March 28, 2009

Q: I enjoy your column in The Herald. Just recently, I have experienced the following problem with e-mails in Outlook that have .pps attachments. When I click on the attachment, a popup appears asking me if I would like to open it. I click open and it sends me to an Adobe Photoshop screen with pictures of mine. Is there a quick fix?

A: A .pps file extension is a Microsoft Powerpoint file that has been saved as a slideshow. Normally, a Powerpoint file is saved as a .ppt file, but the file creator can create a slideshow from it. You can go to office.microsoft.com/ en-us/powerpoint/ HA100966951033.aspx, to download the free viewer.

Q: How do I import my Internet Explorer bookmarks from my old computer to my new laptop? I have a flash drive that I can use for the transfer.

A: In Internet Explorer 7, go to the file menu, and select import and export to launch the wizard. In the import/export selection dialogue box, highlight export favorites, and click on next. Select the favorites folder in the following window, and export to a file or address. You will want to navigate to your flash drive to save the bookmark file.

Now, reverse the steps. On your new laptop, launch Internet Explorer, and launch the wizard again, only this time, select import favorites. Navigate to your flash drive to locate your export bookmark file, and drop it in your favorites directory. Finish it up and you're done.
