I'm in the market to buy a new PC system for my family, and see lots of computers, laptops and printers being sold at Costco. Is it safe buying from them as opposed to Best Buy?
This depends on a number of factors. Have you researched the models online, and know exactly what you want to buy? Are you driven by getting the lowest price possible, or looking for the best value? Do you need advice on selecting the right system?
I'm not here to endorse any particular retailer, manufacturer or product; the goal is to help you gain knowledge and navigate the available choices.
In general, I would be comfortable buying computers and printers from Costco, but would stick with the major name brands. What I have seen is that these computers have model numbers slightly different from the retail and online stores. That's because they're packaged specifically for Costco, so often you'll see bundles — such as a computer, monitor, wireless keyboard/mouse and speakers. Also, the specs may reflect model lines that are nearing the end of the model cycle, with the latest and greatest models showing up on the shelves at Best Buy in coming months.
But if the specs on the machine are acceptable to you, and the price is right, then buy with the assurance that Costco has a liberal return policy, and the manufacturers still provide warranties on these products.
However, if you need advice on selecting the right system, Best Buy will be the preferred venue. They have knowledgeable staff in each department that a warehouse person may not have.
