Using Skype, Cellular Phone Technology in the US Versus Abroad

October 25, 2008

My kids tell me to install Skype on my computer so that they could call me and video chat for free. Is this a good idea? — Charlie L.

Charlie,

Yes!  Skype is one of several Internet-based programs that will allow you to make calls, send chats, and converse using web cams for free. Of course, you do need an Internet connection, and a decently-fast computer – especially for the video chatting. You can go to the Skype website and download the latest version of their program. Once installed, you can locate friends and family who may also be using the service, and get connected with them!

I keep hearing news about how cell phone service in the United States is slower and has less features than our counterparts in Asia or Europe. Is this true? — Sherie M.

Sherie,

Short answer, yes. For example, in a Japanese supermarket one can pay for groceries and such by swiping one’s phone in front of the register. Personal information already stored in the phone will connect and deduct payment from a checking/savings account. This is similar to our debit or charge card. Mobile phone usage in other developed countries are much more pervasive than in the United States and technology implementation more accepted, but perhaps a more fundamental discussion is the business (and profit) model of our US-based mobile carriers.
