Byte Technology recently obtained certification as a Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) through the National Minority Supplier Diversity Council in California and Colorado. This designation was instrumental in the company being awarded a contract with a regional water utility company, and has opened the door to other opportunities with Fortune 500 companies.

Last month, Byte Technology attended the Rocky Mountain Growth through Partnerships conference in Denver, where representatives from companies such as Cisco, Macy’s and Temple-Inland met with MBE companies. Later this month, Byte Technology will join a delegation attending the annual NMSDC conference in Las Vegas, where other corporate purchasers and suppliers will be present.

New Search Engine Technology

In the ever-evolving world of search engine technology, we wanted to mention two relatively new emerging technologies to be considered when designing or updating any Web site at this time. Search engines are finding new ways to asses a Web site’s value and positioning. They have recently been awarded patents that allow the search engine to “view” and “understand” Web sites much like humans do. Knowledge of these developments is essential towards properly designing these Web sites in such a way that they command a favorable position and are easy to find.

First, we want to mention Latent Symantec Indexing (LSI). This is a method for search engines to obtain conceptual and related information in your content.. No longer will content indexing be so dependent on keywords and key word strings. LSI tries to understand the topic similar to humans. Today’s Web designers must be familiar with this new development when constructing Web pages, being careful to use keywords strategically and assembling themes sometimes called “synsets”. For example, in a veterinary business, keyword themes may cluster around dog and canines, cats and felines, or horses and equines. Once crawled by the search engines, folks searching for canine health care may find a veterinary organization that specializes in dog care and boarding!

The next is optical character recognition software and its newer cousin “facial recognition software”. In the past, words contained within images on a Web site could not be seen. People places or things were not “visible” by the search engines either. The search engines are now always trying to emulate how humans view things. Optical character recognition is slowly being implemented. Soon, search engines will be able to “see” those words on an image and recognize faces. This will be used in their indexing and ranking of your Web site. This technology is being used in Google “Street View” to actually read storefront and street signs.

Global Forum on MSM & HIV

The Global Forum on Men Who Have Sex with Men & HIV was formed in response to a shared concern that current HIV strategies and responses do not adequately address the needs of MSM, a fact exacerbated by persistent prejudice, denial and human rights abuses.

The MSMGF was first convened at the 2006 International AIDS Conference in Toronto. It is a growing network of civil society groups, AIDS organizations, MSM groups and other supporting agencies that work at global, regional and national levels to advocate for improved HIV programming and access to prevention, care and treatment services.
