The Monterey Peninsula Chamber of Commerce presented its 16th Annual Business Excellence Awards on Wednesday night at the Embassy Suites in Seaside in front of a crowd of more than 300 attendees.

Attendees enjoyed a four-course meal prepared by the Embassy Suites, along with local wines from Ventana Vineyards and Hahn Estates. The award dinner was sponsored by the chamber, First National Bank of Central California and KION News 46.

Mistress of ceremonies Beverly Byer from KION, along with 20 other presenters, announced 17 winners in 11 categories.

The winners are:

- Arts/Culture (Under 50 employees): California Performing Arts Festival

- Arts/Culture (Over 50 employees): County of Monterey: One Voice Arts & Leadership Program

- Dining/Nightlife (Under 50 employees): Grapes of Wrath California Catering

- Dining/Nightlife (Over 50 employees): The Fish Hopper Restaurant

- Education: Golden Gate University

- Family Friendly (Under 50 employees): Corporate Kids Events Inc.

- Family Friendly (Over 50 employees): Household Credit Services Inc.

- Hospitality/Tourism (Under 50 employees): Monterey Fairgrounds

- Hospitality/Tourism (Over 50 employees): Bernardus Lodge

- Nonprofit: YMCA of Monterey Peninsula

- Professional/Business Sales and Service (Under 50): EMC Planning Group

- Professional/Business Sales & Service (Over 50): Washington Mutual Bank

- Retail Sales & Service (Under 50): The Men's Wearhouse

- Retail Sales & Service (Over 50): Saks Fifth Avenue

- Technology/Manufacturing: California-American Water Co.

- Rookie of the Year: Energia Body Centre

- Adopt a Business: Byte Technology

The purpose of the Business Excellence Awards is to increase public awareness of the role business plays on the Central Coast and to bestow recognition on those businesses that have achieved excellence in their field.

All categorical winners are now eligible to be considered for Business of the Year, which will be awarded in January 2003 at the annual inaugural and awards dinner.
